Sometimes I need to share a quick non-article update about what’s going on and not everyone has access to social media…

I Was Interviewed on The Horror Mosaic

I Was Interviewed on The Horror Mosaic

I was interviewed on Isaiah Swanson/The Bitter Wolf’s show, The Horror Mosaic, about what I do here on LittleZotz.com and – of course – my work over on my horror-focused website, HorrorFam.com!

Here’s the summary Isaiah wrote of for episode:

“As the founder and co-owner of HorrorFam.com, Lauren wears many hats. She edits every article, hosts the HorrorFam.com Podcast, manages social media (@LoveHorrorFam on Instagram, X, and YouTube), applies her many artistic and creative talents to the website’s design and upkeep, and handles countless behind-the-scenes tasks to keep the site thriving. In addition to her work with HorrorFam.com, Lauren manages LittleZotz.com, a place where she writes about “everything else”, as she puts it. In the profile, Lauren discusses growing up in the horror industry, talks about her work with HorrorFam and LittleZotz, and reflects on the power of horror and art in general to help us through the darkest times in our lives. I think Lauren is an inspiration, but I might be biased because I write for her in my human form at HorrorFam!”

Check it out! I’m not interviewed often (I’m usually the one interviewing other people) and, on the rare occasions when I am, I usually find the end result barely watchable… But I thought this one was really nice! Isaiah interviewed me for over two hours and edited my nervous rambling down to a concise 15 minutes while still maintaining the context.

If you’ve ever been curious about me or what I do or how/why I do what I do: This is the interview for you to watch! πŸ˜€

Rest In Peace, Flex

Rest In Peace, Flex

August 1st, we got the devastating news that Flex’s cancer was back, inoperable, and extremely aggressive. We made every second with her count and she had such a wonderful time she lasted 2 weeks longer than we were told to expect. It’s been extremely hard. She passed this morning at home. Frank, my parents, and Tina (Flex’s mother) appreciate your love/prayers during this difficult time. Thank you.

I’m 10 Years Free from Self-Harm!

I’m 10 Years Free from Self-Harm!

On August 3, 2014 – after over a decade of cutting (self-harm) – I made one very final cut… God, the EMTs, the ER docs, and a few others said, β€œNot yet.” August 4, 2014 was the start of what became the life I have now. A life free from self-injury.

I’m one decade clean from self-harm as of yesterday (August 4, 2024)!

To celebrate, I drew self-portraits of myself at each age from nine until now.

I’m 39 Today!!

I’m 39 Today!!

Ain’t that a kick in the head β€” I’m 39 years old today! (January 7, 2024) πŸ₯³ πŸŽ‰ πŸŽ‚ 🎈

I’ll have more to say about this later on in the year since 2024 marks some pretty important personal milestones for me. But, for now, I just wanted to share that I’m still here and that I’m another year older. It’s a blessing.

And, if you’re reading this, then you’re still alive too. I’m glad.

Talk to you again soon(ish).

Have You Been to HorrorFam.com Lately??

Have You Been to HorrorFam.com Lately??

I haven’t mentioned my horror website on here in a while (I usually figure that those who’re into it are already there!) but, in case you’re unaware: I run a horror website! It updates every Friday.

If you’re looking for fun movies to indulge in for Spooky Month, I’d like to draw your extra special attention to my latest post over there:

“35+ MORE Kid & Tween-Friendly Horror Films”

It’s a sequel to the “20 Kid & Tween-Friendly Horror Flicks” post my bestie Christi wrote back in 2020, and I worked incredibly hard on it! In total, I recommended 76 films (though only 39 have headers – I went on a few tangents within the descriptions lol), 7 books, and 3 shows. If you can’t find something in the horror genre your tween loves, I’m out of ideas! πŸ˜… Please go check it out and share the post with your friends!

Speaking of sequels, next Friday I’m sharing my picks of at least a dozen horror movie sequels that are just as good (and sometimes better) than their original films. And my dad is already writing up a list of his own! And I’m pretty sure my husband is going to write a Part III!! Hahaha.

We have fun. Go check it out! My list of family-friendly horror movies is a great place to start not only because it’s brand new and I worked really hard on it and I really want you to read it, but also because they’re relatively safe spooky movie choices for anyone 10 & up. They’re horror movies for people who are young, new to the horror genre, or don’t normally like horror because it’s too scary but wanna (safely) join in on the Halloween festivities this month. I got you! β™₯

Tina Got Spayed Too!

Tina Got Spayed Too!

Remember how we had to get Flex spayed October 27th? We figured we would get Tina (our other cat) spayed once we recovered from that debt but NOPE! Tina had to go in Monday for an emergency spay due to pyometra! 😱

The doc and nurses did an absolutely AMAZING job (and gifted us with some truly gnarly photos of what her uterus looked like β€” and dang Tina’s uterus was as bad or worse than mine and that’s saying something because mine was mutated as all heck!) and Tina is recovering comfortably at home. Since Frank and I are always here, Tina hasn’t had to wear her cone very much IRL (only if she gets REALLY insistent about licking her stitches!). She does get very vocal when it’s time for her pain meds or if her hot water bottle gets too cold, but is otherwise doing really well and is eating, drinking, and pooping normally. She has to go back in 14 days to get her staples & stitches out.

Tina gave us a MAJOR scare!! And now we’re even more in debt… but our baby girls are worth it. ❀️ Once again: Get your cats fixed as soon as you can!! For their sake!

Flex Got Spayed

Flex Got Spayed

Let me start this by saying we’re all basically okay now (cats and humans!), but whew boy the past few weeks have been rough. Our younger cat, Flex, hit puberty in a big way a few years ago… but we kept putting off getting her spayed. We were much more focused on making MY lifesaving hysterectomy happen (no easy feat!) and, even after, funds were tight. Well, things you put off always have a way of coming back around to bite you, don’t they? In this case, quite literally…

Flex went into a major Heat towards the end of October. Then, on October 26th, she saw a neighbor’s female cat (competition!) through our back window, went absolutley chimp level berserk, and lashed out at Tina (our older cat, Flex’s mother), Frank (my husband), and myself. Frank’s wounds were BAD (paramedics were called level of bad!) and he and I both had to go to the local Urgent Care within 12hrs for tetanus shots and STRONG antibiotics.

Flex was spayed (kitty hysterectomy) the next day. She’s doing really well! She’s nearly 100% recovered physically and her attitude is also recovering. Since she was always great any time she wasn’t in heat, the vet said she should return to that default once the hormones fully leave her system in 4-6 weeks. She and Tina will be reintroduced then. Tina is already fully recovered from the fight and enjoying her alone time away from her daughter.

Frank is all better save for some “battle damage” scars (his left arm looks like he faced off with a bobcat rather than a housecat but he heals well and the tissue will fade). I’m having some residual issues from the antibiotics (yes, Frank and I are BOTH taking probiotics; thanks) and nerve pains in my left hand but I’m nearly there. I’ve been editing some great guest posts for HorrorFam.com and I have some things in the works for LittleZotz.com too!

Thank you for your patience re: my content production. November is always difficult, but this year is especially hard. We’re still dealing with the losses of both of my uncles this year, among other things (equally serious but not able to discuss). The fact that I’ve done ANYthing this year kind of blows my mind…

Thanks again. More soon β€πŸ™

One Full Year Uterus-Free!

One Full Year Uterus-Free!

On July 23rd, 2021, I had FIVE organs removed: My cervix, my right fallopian tube, my left fallopian tube, my right ovary, and my demonic uterus. Today, on the one-year anniversary, I’m making an update about what’s been going on in my life since then.

This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase anything using my links, I’ll get a small commission for referring you at no additional cost to you. It’s a perfect way to support me/my content while buying something awesome you would have bought anyway.

One Year Ago Today: July 23, 2021

It’s hard to believe it’s been 365 days since my lifesaving β€” and life changing β€” surgery! Wow!!

One year ago today, my husband Frank and I took an Uber ride to the surgery center. Then, Frank had to kiss me goodbye and wish me luck. Due to COVID restrictions in Los Angeles, no one was allowed into the building but staff and patients… that meant no loving husband by my side. Frank caught a ride back home where he and my parents waited anxiously by the phone, texting my bestie Christi the details as they came in.

Meanwhile, I was getting prepped for major surgery. They gave me a Pepcid for stomach acid (didn’t want acid reflux making a nasty guest appearance while I was unconscious!) and crossed their fingers that nothing would go wrong with the anesthesia. I had been put under once in my life before, for my hip replacement/bone graft as a wee one, but every medical and dental procedure I’d had since was done with only local anesthetics.

I tend to have bad reactions to strong medications. And even some “normal” ones (I’m deathly allergic to cough syrup, for example!).

They gave me zero painkillers while I was under. I had a prescription for Ibuprofen and an antinausea medication for when I got home. And, Papa & Barkley CBD ReLeaf Capsules came highly recommended. So, I had a bottle of those too! And they’re amazing. As someone who has struggled with chronic inflammation for most of my adult life, they were a Godsend, even now, long after my recovery period has come and gone. I was so impressed that Papa & Barkley’s CBD products actually do everything they say they will (from what I’ve experienced, a lot of places just slap the “CBD” label on to be trendy and the actual benefits are nil) that I became one of “Papa’s Champs” and recommend their products to everyone β€” especially fellow Spoonies who have never known a life completely free from pain…

Speaking of pain, the surgery itself went extremely well! And I kinda freaked out the staff a little bit. They were hovering around nervously, expecting me to have some trouble β€” after all, I’d just had five organs removed with zero painkillers! β€” but I was basically a-okay!! Compared to the pain I’d been in BEFORE the surgery, the actual operation pain was NOTHING!!

Our friend Brian’s girlfriend, Annie, picked me up and drove me home from the surgery center. They’d been together quite a while, but that was the first time I’d gotten to meet her in person (how memorable, huh??). She got me home safely and was an excellent driver. I liked her a ton, even though it was odd circumstances and a bit hard to concentrate due to the lingering anesthesia making me a bit woozy.

I’m happy to report that, since then, Brian and Annie have gotten engaged! β™₯

So, that’s one big thing that’s changed since my surgery last year! Here are a few other things:

What I Do When I’m Not Here: HorrorFam.com! (VIDEO)

Hey, Everyone!

In my last blog post on how to continue creating during a personal crisis, I mentioned that I’d been “getting a lot done” in spite of recent events (losing my maternal uncle and my paternal uncle exactly 4 weeks apart) but it became clear that folks who only read LittleZotz.com were like “uh… suuuure you are, Lauren… There’s, like, nothing here…>_<“

Well, silly goose, that’s because LittleZotz.com isn’t my only website, and hasn’t been in quite some time! πŸ˜›

I also run HorrorFam.com and host the HorrorFam.com Podcast! It’s a positive-minded website focused on horror β€” a homey place for horror fans with articles (by myself and others), audio, and videos created with a pure love for the horror genre and the people who make it so special.

HorrorFam.com isn’t for kids, but it’s family-friendly. Think PG13 instead of a hard R as far as horror-related stuff goes. You can browse HorrorFam.com’s content in public without having people let out scandalized gasps if they peek over your shoulder. It’s actually a wonderful website to go to for both diehard horror fans (like myself, my husband, my parents, my besties, etc.) and for people who want to support the horror fans in their life and/or introduce someone they love (gently!) to the horror genre.

Here’s a video of myself putting on makeup before immediately segueing into hosting the most recent episode of the HorrorFam.com Podcast β€” and, don’t worry, there’s nothing scary in this video at all (unless you think my face in scary… in which case, um, ow?):
