How I Know Ramiro

Someone I knew showed me Ramiro’s artwork when I was sixteen. I became an instant fan.

It took me two years to work up the nerve, but I ended up reaching out to Ramiro to express my fondness for his work and, over time, we became friends. He’s now my favorite person in the whole world.

In 2009, Ramiro and I became roommates. And, three years after I started LittleZotz Writing, he became my official illustrator in 2013. We’ve been working together ever since.

I always say that people come to LZW for the illustrations and stay for the writing… So many people over the years have told me how much they love Ramiro’s artwork. So, I thought it was time for you all to meet the man behind the magic. Enjoy.

My Interview with Ramiro Roman

What do you do?

I’m a horror artist. I draw comics and other weird stuff.

How did you start?

I started drawing when I was very young. I got into horror comics as a kid, and took a lot of inspiration from weird movies my parents probably shouldn’t have let me see. I didn’t really become serious about what I do until dropping out of college. I started making my own zines and comics, and kept going from there.

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

Finishing something and sharing it with an audience. Whether it’s a commission piece, a personal work, or a new comic. With comics, I always like hearing everyone’s reactions and interpretations.

What advice do you have for someone looking into doing what you do?

Don’t worry about doing it like the “pros,” just do it as best as you can.

What’s next for you?

I have a graphic novel coming out soon called The Secret Flesh. It’s written by Robert Parigi and being published by Clive Barker’s Seraphim, Inc.

I’ll soon be doing conceptual work on a video game, but I can’t really say much at this point other than it looks like a lot of fun.
