I nabbed an interview with another fascinating artist this week. Please give a big round of virtual applause to Aaron Lewis, Halloween mask designer and sculptor.
How I Know Aaron
Aaron and I met through a party thrown by a mutual friend. He’s a super nice guy and has always been extremely supportive of my own artistic ventures, feeble as they are. (He even drew me some amazing fan art!). It’s impossible not to like Aaron. Just read on and see for yourself!
My Interview with Aaron Lewis
What do you do?
I make rubber halloween masks. Currently I am a mask designer/sculptor for Trick or Treat Studios.
How did you start?
As far back as I can remember I’ve been into monsters, Halloween, and spooky stuff in general. One day when I was in fifth grade a friend of mine handed me an issue of Fangoria during lunch. I was hooked on that magazine from then on. There was a little section in back where you could mail away for makeup supplies and other things like liquid latex, blood capsules, etc. It’s amazing how much fun you can have with a 1oz bottle of liquid latex when you’re in fifth grade! Anyway, that’s pretty much what kicked off the interest in makeup and making things. I just kept with it and when the internet came around and I got on there it opened up new information and resources I didn’t have access to before so I was able to move into making bigger things like full head masks.
What’s your favorite part of what you do?
Hmmmm…. I really enjoy sculpting and painting but recently at a show I noticed that nearly everyone that walked past my table would look at my work and smile to themselves. I think that’s my favorite part.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into doing what you do?
Be patient and do it because you love doing it, not because you think it will make you lots of money, because most likely it won’t. Ha!
What’s next for you/your business?
Well, in my immediate future are 2 or 3 new masks for Trick or Treat Studios 2013 linup! Beyond that I have no idea. I’ll just keep making things because I like making things.
